Crypto leverage explained: margin, liquidation and position size

A beginner-friendly explanation of leverage in crypto trading and the practical controls that help limit liquidation risk.

Leverage changes exposure, not market direction

Leverage lets a trader control a larger position with a smaller amount of margin. It does not make a trade more likely to be correct. If price moves against a leveraged position, losses also grow faster and the account can reach a liquidation threshold. The lower the margin buffer, the less room the trade has to absorb normal volatility.

Build the position from risk first

Start with the amount you are prepared to lose if the trade idea is wrong. Then define an invalidation level and calculate a position size that fits that risk. Do not choose a larger position simply because the platform allows it. Funding costs, fees and sudden volatility should all be considered before opening a leveraged trade.
